Program Description


The Chinese Program introduces students to both Chinese language and civilization. Its objective is to teach students the basic skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing Chinese. Besides providing practical training in the language for career purposes, we offer activities at the Chinese Language Suite in Luce, invite lectures speakers and celebrate Chinese New Year each year. China is not one monolith but an endless story of self-reinvention and self-redefinition. Knowledge of China sprawls out and requires inter-disciplinary approaches and cross-disciplinary training that you get in such departments as East Asian Studies, History, Philosophy, Religious Studies and Sociology.

The major in Chinese Studies consists of at least eleven courses beyond CHIN 101-102, including the following: CHIN 201, 202, 301, 302 (4 courses). CHIN 311 or 312 (1 course). CHIN 401, 451, 452 (3 courses). At least three (and no more than 7) courses from the following list, including courses from at least two departments other than CHIN: 220223, 250, 311 or 312; HIST 101 (when China-focused) 200, 201, 237; PHIL 232; RELS 267; SOC 219 (when China-focused). Completion of an approved off-campus study programs in China. Approved transfer credit from endorsed programs can count toward the major requirements. Students who wish to take the maximum number of courses for this major are encouraged to complete additional courses from the options offered in these major requirements.

A Chinese Studies minor consists of six courses: 3 language courses: Intermediate Chinese 201, 202 and 311, or the equivalents from endorsed off-campus programs. 3 cultural courses in translation from among the following CHIN: 220222250,  History 200: Traditional China * History 201: Modern China * History 237: The United States and China * Philosophy 222: Chinese Philosophy.
